I chose Cama Beach State Park for this hike for a couple reasons. One, it's in the lowlands and down here most of our recent snow is finally melted. I don't mind snow, but I have been taking my dogs with on all hikes because with his broken leg, my husband can't let them out on our property easily. Frodo and Luna aren't super fond of getting wet and freezing at the same time. Secondly, I want to visit all of the State Parks in Washington eventually and had never spent time at this one.
I was really pleased with my choice. These trails were well-maintained and well marked. The forest was beautiful and peaceful, and the beach was as well. I took a day off and went on a Friday in December that was a bit cloudy with a chance of rain. I don't know if that is why, but I only saw one other person on the trail and no one on the beach.
I think this would be a great place for birding. I heard a bald eagle and saw a couple ravens and a very shy Douglas squirrel. A few wrens and towhees were flitting about as well.
There were a bunch of larger parking lots and some kind of shuttle service to take people to the cafe and beach/cabins I believe. I imagine that might only run in the summer, but I didn't look into that. I also didn't pop into the cafe, although it was enticing, since I had the dogs along. I would love to go back and stay in a cabin here. Especially in the winter season maybe when it's so quiet.
Cama Beach State Park is on the traditional territory of the Tulalip, Skagit, Stillaguamish, and KiKiallus peoples.
