Former Israeli Prime Minister Shim'on Peres played down the significance of Pakistan's nuclear tests on Thursday (28/05), saying they did not represent disaster for Asia. Peres was the founder of the Israel's nuclear programme fostered very much by a close relationship with French President Charles Charles de Gaulle in the late 1950's and early 1960's.

MS two shot of reporter and Shimon Peres inside the Labour Party offices;
SOT Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres "We are having two different issues, one ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan and the other is the new generation of weaponry, by the way there are other weapons which are also very dangerous like the biological and chemical weapons as well. It's a bitter effect and it complicates the situation bewteen the region and worldwide, but to be realistic I do not see that there is much chance to disarm them of nuclear weapons."
Two shot: Question from journalist "Do you think there are any implications of what is happening in the Indian sub-continent to what is going on here (middle east)"
SOT Former Israeli Prime Minister Shim'on Peres "It will clearly introduce a new race of arms in this area, I don't know what the Iranians are going to do and I don't know the policy of the Pakistanis, but until now recently one nation did not offer nuclear weapons to any other nation. I hope this will be the case with the Pakistanis as well but it is a newly created situation and we have to watch it very carefully."
Two shot: Question from reporter "Do you think Israel should now sign the non-proliferation treaty."
Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres "The problem of Israel is that she never announced that she possessed nuclear bombs. She says she will never introduce nuclear bombs in the middle east. Israel has announced she will not test any weapons of this sort. Israel has signed the chemical agreement they will not use chemical weapons and actually the middle east will taste a real peace then we can arrive again to a nuclear free middle east of weapons and missiles. The problem is in the middle east we have three wild customers, the Iraqis the Iranians and the Libyans. Before we will get rid of the wildness it will be extrememly hard to introduce an overall control of armament in the middle east."
