A Math Teacher's Geometric Dream Tiny House

The “Phi House” is Jamie York’s small geodesic dome, located in Paonia, Colorado. It is built in the shape of a rhombic triacontahedron, which is formed from 30 identical rhombuses (diamond shape). We believe that it is the only rhombic triacontahedron house ever made!

Jamie York is a math missionary and math teacher, who has been inspiring students for 38 years. Stereometry – the ancient study of three-dimensional solids – is a common 8th grade math topic in the Waldorf curriculum. Jamie’s 8th grade students experience the Platonic solids, Archimedean solids, and their duals – a total of 31 polyhedra – by making some of them in clay and paper. Jamie’s longtime dream was to build a house in the shape of a rhombic triacontahedron because it is the only one that comes out of the dodecahedron (which consists of twelve pentagons), and offers the possibility of vertical walls.

Phi House Details:
• Floor area (including the loft): 420 sq.ft. ( 39 m2)
• The floor is a decagon (ten sides)
• Diameter of floor = 21.5 ft (6.56m)
• Height (from lower entry to top of ceiling) = 14 ft (4.29m)
• The rhombic triacontahedron consists of 30 identical rhombuses. We had a total of 25 of these rhombic panels prefabricated, and then delivered to the site on a truck.
• Each panel has edges 7.5 feet long (2.27m), and diagonals that are 12.5 ft and 7.8 ft.
• The peak of the building is marked by five panels. Opposite from this peak there are five panels which (in our imagination) come together and meet about four feet below ground level. These five panels, only partially visible above the ground, were custom made (instead of prefabricated).
