This episode Google maps diverts us onto a mountain pass gravel, short cut away off Route 1 we encounter a few impatient and crazy drivers, and stop in some pretty , off beaten track locations. It's not only about the iconic places. Then Seyðisfjörður , Egilsstadir camp and the basalt columns of Stuðlagil Canyon - not before being forced off the road by gale force winds and taking refuge. Then it becomes a dash across the north with Europe's largest waterfall Dettifoss, the geothermal area of Hverir and Godafoss.

Running out of time with the weather closing in again we want to see some icons at Kirkjufell, the Golden Circle and wrap up with a hard to book Tomato soup lunch at Fridheimar before handing the van back at Keflavik - but Iceland being Iceland again, we have to change our plans.

We're David and Paula and seeing the Northern Lights is on our bucket list and people often ask us if we'd ever do a trip in a campervan rather than our off-road Zone van and Defender back in Australia. So we decided to do a Lap of Iceland's famous ring road, in a campervan as the weather heads into winter's peak aurora season.

And its spectacular, but while so many of the instagram shots and YouTube vids show Iceland's stunning scenery, the Northern Lights, the Puffins and more, very few influencers show it when things don't go to plan.
