Continuing on the path in search of the Metabolism Boosting Holy Grail Abbey explores the pros and cons of tea, fiber, getting enough sleep, and eating every single time you feel hungry. For those of you that have been watching this is actually part 3 of the Metabolism Mythbusters series.
While none of us can deny that tea is a uniquely delicious beverage that has many known benefits, including making us feel warm and cozy.Tthe question posed here however is not how comfy tea makes us feel it's whether or not is has a positive effect on our metabolism. Caffeine has been said to have metabolism boosting benefits. That is the main reason you can't pick up a diet supplement pill bottle without finding a tea extract of some sort at the main ingredient. Researchers also believe that the catechin antioxidants in green tea specifically may have other thermogenic properties as well. Drinking tea has been linked to a modest boost in metabolism creating a burn of roughly 50-60 extra calories burned per day. However, to actually see that amount of burn you would need to be consuming over 5 cups of green tea per day. That’s a lot of tea, and a lot of caffeine. Tea is tasty, yes, and a great calorie free alternative to soda or juice, but I wouldn't want to overdose on the stuff just to see a moderate boost in my metabolic rate.
The next metabolic mythbuster Abbey tackles is fiber. Abbey isn't pulling any punches on this one stating emphatically "this one kind of sucks". There are no end of sensationalized blogs that claim that fiber will increase metabolism but the research simply does not support this theory at all. As any of you regular watchers know Abbey adamantly recommends a high fiber diet because it has been repeatedly shown to enhance satiety, making you eat less because you feel full. However, studies have actually found it may decrease your post-meal metabolism slightly. The study was however conducted using a tiny sample base so don't stress over it either way, just something to be aware of. The bottom line here is that if you are going to eat more fiber eat it to feel full, not to burn calories.
How many of you have gotten the advice to eat when you're hungry and eat often? This metabolic mythbuster is tricky on many levels. Following that advice can, in fact, result in a metabolic boost. It is entirely dependent on what you're eating. If you eat when you're hungry and eat often and what you consume is loaded with undesirable ingredients like high fructose corn syrup you will soon find yourself feeling like you're riding a roller coaster. Research suggests that having regular small meals every few hours is a good way to keep your metabolism fire burning all day long. So start to tune into those hunger cues and give yourself the opportunity to nourish your body regularly. Be sure to nourish it with high quality foods that make sense during your daily activities. Trust me, once you start asking yourself if you’re hungry enough to eat, and fueling that fire regularly, those hunger signal will become much more loud and clear.
Our last metabolic mythbuster comes from the land of dreams. Abbey puts sleep on trial and asks the hard question of whether or not getting enough sleep has a serious impact on our metabolism. Studies consistently link poor sleep habits to higher risk of obesity and food cravings. The thing is, there isn’t a lot of evidence that getting your 8 hours of sleep will boost your metabolism at all. She did come across one small study that found that short sleepers burned about 100 calories more per day that those getting 8+. She says this is most likely because they were more active and those calories were more than compensated for by a raging appetite. We definitely need more research on metabolism and sleep, but in the meantime, there are plenty of good reasons to clock in get some serious ZZZ's.
Will Abbey ever find a true metabolic miracle? Only time will tell.
