A night of music and socialising turned into a bloodbath in Bekkersdal Informal Settlement, west of Johannesburg, when armed gunmen opened fire at a licensed tavern shortly before 1am. Nine people were killed and at least ten others seriously injured in what police have described as a random, unprovoked mass shooting.
Eyewitnesses describe chaos as suspects travelling in a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Etios sprayed bullets using pistols and an AK-47 rifle, before fleeing the scene. Victims were shot inside the tavern, outside while running for safety, and even at a nearby clinic where some later succumbed to their injuries.
Police have launched a manhunt as concerns grow over illegal firearms, gang violence, poverty, and the escalating wave of mass shootings across Gauteng.
