Boilers and other cylindrical vessels have two types of joints: the longitudinal joint and the circumferential joint. If there is a joint, the material of the shell is drilled with rivet holes. A hole reduces the area of resistance. A smaller surface area means more stress in the shell's material.
A joint's maximum shear stress and efficiency are explained in this video.
