Full Body Harness – All About & Importance
A Full Body Harness (FBH) is a critical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used to protect workers from falls while working at height. It is designed to support the entire body and safely arrest a fall, reducing the risk of serious injury or death.
What is a Full Body Harness?
A full body harness is a system of webbing straps worn over the shoulders, around the chest, waist, and thighs. It distributes fall forces across the strongest parts of the body (thighs, pelvis, chest, shoulders) and connects to an anchorage point through a lanyard or lifeline.
Main Components
Shoulder Straps – Support upper body
Chest Strap – Keeps shoulder straps in place
Leg Straps – Support lower body and prevent slipping
D-Ring (Back/Front) – Attachment point for lanyard
Buckles/Adjusters – For proper fitting
Sub-Pelvic Strap – Helps distribute fall force
Importance of Full Body Harness
✔ Prevents fatal falls during work at height
✔ Distributes impact force evenly across the body
✔ Prevents suspension trauma when used correctly
✔ Mandatory by safety standards (OSHA, IS, EN)
✔ Protects during slips, trips, or loss of balance
✔ Improves worker confidence and productivity
Where Full Body Harness is Used
Work at height (above 1.8 meters / 6 feet)
Scaffolding work
Roofing & sheet fixing
Manlift / Boom lift / Scissor lift
Tower, chimney, and silo work
Steel structure erection
Maintenance & inspection work
Types of Full Body Harness
Standard FBH – General height work
Fall Arrest Harness – With shock-absorbing lanyard
Positioning Harness – Allows hands-free work
Rescue Harness – For confined space & rescue
Tower/Climbing Harness – Extra support and comfort
Correct Usage Guidelines
Always inspect before use (cuts, wear, buckles, stitching)
Ensure proper fitting (not too loose or tight)
Connect only to approved anchorage point
Use with double lanyard & shock absorber
Never modify or repair damaged harness
Provide training to users
Consequences of Not Using Harness
❌ Serious injury or death
❌ Legal penalties and work stoppage
❌ Permanent disability
❌ Company reputation damage
Safety Standards
IS 3521 (India)
OSHA (USA)
EN 361 / EN 355 (Europe)
Conclusion
A Full Body Harness is a life-saving device and the most important safety equipment for work at height. Proper selection, inspection, training, and correct usage can prevent fatal accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
