Powered by a Chevy Ram Jet 350 with electronic fuel injection (350 horsepower, 400 lb-ft of torque), this classic overland build has been slowly transformed over 13 years with rust repair, fresh Toyota Cement Gray paint, a lightweight functional camper interior, and cold-weather-ready systems. But driving a 46-year-old Land Cruiser with a custom engine swap, manual 5-speed, and unproven suspension setup means every pothole, driveline load, and 4-low engagement is a gamble. On this mountain shakedown trip, weak points start to reveal themselves—including suspension travel issues and a transfer case that won’t stay in gear.
