This is the MG4 Urban, MG’s newest and most affordable electric car. It may share the MG4 name, but this is a completely different model. It sits on new E3 underpinnings and, unlike the regular MG4, it’s front-wheel drive.
Prices start at £23,495, putting it in line with the Hyundai Inster and Renault 5. MG is currently offering £1,500 off, dropping the price to £21,995, plus a 0% APR finance deal with no deposit. For value alone, it’s very appealing.
The Urban is actually bigger than the regular MG4. It’s longer, slightly wider and taller, and even larger than a Nissan Leaf in some dimensions. Boot space is generous too. MG quotes 577 litres to the roof, including underfloor storage, and in real terms it easily beats the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster for luggage capacity.
Rear space is a real highlight. There’s plenty of legroom and headroom for adults over six feet tall, a flat floor, rear air vents and good storage. It feels airy and practical, making it far more usable for families than some small EV rivals.
Battery options include a 41.9kWh unit with a 201-mile range, or a 52.8kWh battery offering up to 258 miles. That’s decent, though not class-leading. Maximum charging speed is 85kW, which is relatively slow if you regularly do long journeys.
Inside, all versions get a 7-inch digital driver display and a 12.8-inch touchscreen. The system is much improved over older MG setups, and there are physical climate controls, which are welcome. Entry models include adaptive cruise control, climate control, a heat pump and a rear camera. Premium trim adds heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera and wireless charging.
Quality is acceptable for the price. There are hard plastics, but also soft-touch materials and useful storage throughout the cabin.
Performance is adequate rather than exciting. Power ranges from 148 to 158hp, with 0-60mph taking around 9.5 seconds. The ride is comfortable enough, though not as refined as the best rivals, and the steering feels a little vague. It’s easy to drive, just not particularly engaging.
Safety is strong, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and every car comes with a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty.
Overall, the MG4 Urban isn’t the most thrilling EV, but it’s spacious, well equipped and very competitively priced. If rivals like the Renault 5 feel too small, this could be the smarter choice.
