Difficulty balancing is one of the most imperative aspects in creating any decent video game. Too easy, and players won't feel any sense of growth or accomplishment as they progress through the game; too hard, and they won't be able to progress at all. A common remedy to this conundrum has been to simply allow players to select their own difficulty setting. It's a simple solution... but is it the right one? Today, I plan to explore the topic of selectable difficulty settings, their positives and negatives, and how they impact some of our favorite games.
