Fond d’Or Nature and Historical Park in Dennery is one of Saint Lucia’s most important heritage sites, blending natural beauty with deep colonial history. Before sugar plantations, this land was home to Amerindian communities, and later it became a major sugar estate powered by windmills, water-powered mills, cattle mills, and a boiling house used to process sugar cane.
In this video, we walk through the ruins of the plantation, explore the technology used during the sugar era, and experience the natural side of the park, including forest trails and birdlife that still thrive today. This site also carries stories of resistance, including Pétronille Dwine, an enslaved woman who was brutally killed in 1833 for maroonage — an act of escaping enslavement — and whose courage sparked unrest among enslaved workers at Fond d’Or.
With the help of a tour guide, we uncover what remains, who lived and worked here, and why Fond d’Or continues to matter today as both a historical landmark and a nature park.
