Ola neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at a bike rack adapter for the Stromberg Carlson Cargo Carrier. Having a cargo carrier for your vehicle is a great, universal tool that can allow you to put a lot of different things on it. One of those things is generally not bicycles as there's no way to mount them on here, well, this bike adapter changes that. You're able to put two bikes on here and with a cargo capacity of 500 pounds, it can be a heavy ebike, it can be pretty much whatever size you need assuming that the wheelbase fits in the cargo carrier itself. The bike adapter for the cargo carrier will accept up to two and a quarter inch wide tires, so that might not allow you to have your fat tire bikes on here, or some chunkier mountain bike tires that go over that two and a quarter inch measurement. So as you can see, I have a standard mountain bike here, as well as a road bike, and it's able to adjust to both of those perfectly.
Also, the fact that this is mounted to your own custom wheel base on your bike means that you can put women's bikes or children's bikes on here with no problem. Having a cargo carrier is great because you can carry cargo obviously, having a bike rack allows you to carry a bike, but most times you can't do both, that's not the case here. We have both of our bikes loaded up, and we also have our cargo loaded. We also still have space on both sides to add a few more little parcels of cargo if you need to. The cargo carrier does have a weight capacity of 500 pounds, so just make sure you have the weight of your bikes and also weigh your cargo if you're gonna load that up.
So the straps are included in the kit and with the available mounting holes on the frame itself, you can find a bunch of different spots to make sure you have a secure connection. With both of these hoops and the strap wrapped around this, you can see the bikes pretty sturdy. Now, I wouldn't want to use this on a carbon fiber frame just because you are mounting to the frame for that extra stability, but other than that, it should hold your bike in place quite well once these are cinched down. The hardware is included and you can really mount this pretty much anywhere in this mesh area, assuming that you are adjusting it to the wheelbase. Now with that, once you have it set and dialed in for a specific bike, you will have to remove the hardware and move it to account for a different wheelbase when putting a different bike on there.
But if you're like me, I kind of ride my same bikes over and over so once I set it to my bikes, it should be good to go. So now that we've gone through some of the features of the bike adapter for the cargo carrier, I want to take it out on our test course and see how it actually acts when hitting some bumps and doing some evasive maneuvering. So through the test course, I was checking my rear view mirror to see if we had any sway. So we're going over a series of bumps, to simulate rough riding, or off-road trails, we also do some of these of maneuvering that you might encounter during unpredictable driving. Now, looking at the bikes in the rear, I can see the sway is very minimal, in fact, it is a platform style with the cargo carrier attachment, so, you have a lot more stability compared to a hanging style rack.
I really do like the fact that the bikes are stayed in place and I didn't have to worry about them falling or hitting each other. So the bikes on the cargo carrier itself hold very sturdy, the only issue I really had was the wobbling of the rack itself. So, side to side action, you can see it moves in the actual receiver itself. If you want a little more stability to hold that firm, you can add a anti-rattle device that we do have here etrailer. With the bikes off the carrier itself, you can see the attachments for the bike rack. Now, we did have to custom fit it to each bike, as we said, so you can see that the mountain bikes wheelbase was slightly different. The tire was larger here so this had to sit back, which in turn, put this further back. So, as long as your wheelbase is in between that 60 inches, you should be good. Now it does fit on the inside, and I did notice that it did kinda wanna sit against the frame of one of the bikes. That is something to keep in mind as overtime, this may rub against it and cause some scratching on the bottom of your frame. So that's something you might wanna check out, is measure where your fr
