The 'Downgrade' controversy was in full swing. Spurgeon found himself, at this time, having to defend the Truth of God's word even to some of his fellow Baptist Pastors. Liberal teaching had swept in from Germany, and many were saying that the Bible contains the Word of God, rather than is the Word of God.
Spurgeon did not enjoy controversy, but he was bold when the times demanded it, as you see here.
