A bit of my recording philosophy: When possible I try to hand in a complete take of a full song, which is to me a complete performance. I’d like to think that there are at least some listeners out there that can detect that kind of honesty—rather than handing in a set of edits, punches and fixes. I prefer something that contains the full flow of the moment from beginning to end. When recording a piece like this, “Painter” by Finally George from the album of the same name, I let the moments where there are no drums pass in real time. My body still moving to the tempo and remaining “in character” for lack of better description. I only stop if there’s a mistake or something I could have played better. So, full disclosure, there is one dit here at the finger cymbal “ding” as I thought I could have played the re-intro fill better. Other than that, what you see is what you hear on this recording session footage that appears on the album, “Painter.”
