5. SOUNDBITE: (Italian/English) Pope Leo XIV:
“(Italian) Good morning everyone, good. And to the Americans here, Happy Thanksgiving! It is a wonderful day to celebrate, and I want to begin by saying thank you to each and every one of you for the service that you offer to the Vatican, to the Holy See, to my person but to the whole world. It is so important today that the message be transmitted in a way that really reveals the truth, the harmony that the world needs and in a special way this particular trip, to Turkey and to Lebanon has, as you know, first of all, the very meaning of unity, celebrating 1700 years from the Council of Nicaea. And I have been very much looking forward to this trip because of what it means for all Christians. But it is also a great message to the whole world and in a special way with the presence of myself, of the church, of believers, in both Turkey and in Lebanon, we hope also to announce, transmit, proclaim how important peace is throughout the world and to invite all people to come together to search for greater unity, greater harmony, and to look for the ways that all men and women can truly be brothers and sisters in spite of differences, in spite of different religions, in spite of different beliefs that we are all brothers and sisters, and to hopefully be a part of promoting peace, unity throughout the world. So, thank you all for being here. I would be happy to greet you all at least from here, maybe individually. Thank you for the service you will be doing during these days.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Leo XIV greeted journalists aboard the Papal plane headed for Turkey with a cheerful “Happy Thanksgiving,” before telling the group that his first trip abroad is intended to send a message of peace throughout the world.
Pope Leo will spend three days in Turkey before traveling to Lebanon on Sunday.
There were 81 journalists traveling with him on the Papal plane.
A photographer quickly donned her New York Knicks cap before presenting the Pope with a pair of Chicago White Sox slippers and socks.
Americans correspondents gave the Pope Thanksgiving pumpkin and pecan pies.
On Thursday, the Pontiff was meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara before heading to Istanbul.
A key part of his visit to Turkey is to make the 1700 anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the first ecumenical council to bring unity among Christians.
Leo is the fifth Pope to visit Turkey after Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XIV and Pope Francis.
The Pope’s trip comes at a particularly fraught period in the Middle East with a delicate ceasefire in Gaza and recent Israeli strikes in both Beirut and southern Lebanon.
