At the age of 40 and above what happens is the fertility potential compared to younger women is definitely lower. Why is this so? This is because as we age our number of eggs and the quality of eggs also decline. So in IVF it is nothing but we are just making sure that the eggs are mature and we are taking out those eggs under anesthesia and we are putting them together with the sperm forming the embryo and placing it back into your uterus. So definitely the success of IVF will depend upon the quality of eggs. So in cases of women who are above 40 the quality of eggs are definitely on the lower side compared to younger women. So the success rate with regards to IVF also is very individualistic. So if a woman has very good quality eggs they can go ahead and plan ideas. So in a woman who is above 40 years of age when the quality of eggs is not that good and we do IVF with them the chances of us getting a not so good quality embryos is also on the higher side and the risk of any employee or abnormalities genetic abnormalities like down syndrome etc is also on the higher side. So in order to improve the success rate with IVF what we usually advise for women who are above 40 or 40 is to undergo something which we call it as pre-genetic testing of the embryos. So once we take out the eggs and we have put it together with the sperm by a process called ICSI or IVF the embryos which are formed before transferring them to the uterus they usually do a genetic test of the embryos a part of the cells is taken out and sent for testing in order to rule out any kind of genetic abnormalities in the embryos and such good embryos which are free of any genetic disorders are usually transferred back into the uterus of the woman and thereby increasing the chances of pregnancy. So the tips for women who are 40 and above for having a successful IVF pregnancy is to visit qualified fertility specialist who will be able to guide you in a good way towards the journey of parenthood in having a happy healthy baby and to have a good fertility diet which contains lots of berries dry fruits walnuts and lot of fruits green leafy vegetables and make sure your plate is very colorful that means it should include fruits and vegetables and to be a colorful food palette. Then you should avoid smoking, you should avoid alcohol intake and make sure you're sleeping enough. Adequate sleep is also very very important and apart from all these make sure that you are checking your medical conditions and making sure that your medical conditions are under control like for example if you're being diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes or hypothyroidism or a hypothyroidism make sure that these medical conditions are diagnosed and are well in control before planning for your pregnancy.
