GASSIRE'S LUTE: A Griot's Legend of the Soninke People of Western Africa
"Gassire is a prince in the ancient African kingdom of Wagadu (Ghana) who would be the successor of his father, but his father is very powerful and shows no sign of dying. The hot-blooded prince wants very badly to be king, and becomes a mighty warrior to demonstrate his strength, but after much anger and pain realizes (after hearing a prophesy made by an old wise man) that his true destiny lies in the supernatural powers of a magical (storyteller) griot's lute. This tale is a part of a larger epic poem called the DAUSI, which was passed from generation to generation in Western Africa by talented musician-poet-performers called GRIOTS, who memorized each and every tale, word for word, to be told to their people in fantastic and artistic performances. Hopefully you enjoy this little-known legend from Western Africa, and as always, learn something new!
