From 1960 to 2025, Ireland’s migration story shifted from a nation long defined by emigration to one increasingly shaped by immigration. For decades, many Irish left in search of opportunity abroad, but the economic boom of the 1990s reversed the flow as workers from across Europe and beyond began arriving in large numbers. Through the 2000s and 2010s, Ireland became a notable destination for labour, education, and refuge, with both returning Irish citizens and foreign-born migrants driving steady population growth. By 2025, roughly one in four residents was born outside Ireland, marking the country’s transformation from an emigrant society into a diverse, immigrant-rich nation.
