11.09.24 - In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, we’re proud to share Portland Youth Philharmonic’s electrifying performance of Sensemayá by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, recorded live on November 9, 2024, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
Revueltas’ Sensemayá is a powerful, rhythmically charged work inspired by an Afro-Cuban poem about a ritual snake-killing. With its hypnotic pulse, bold orchestration, and fierce energy, this piece captures the spirit of resistance, identity, and cultural pride, values deeply connected to the meaning behind Cinco de Mayo.
Conducted by Musical Director David Hattner, this performance honors Revueltas’ legacy and celebrates the vibrant contributions of Latin American composers to the world of classical music.
