***DISCLAIMER and IMPORTANT NOTE: Hiking any mountain in Japan, including Mt. Iwate can be very dangerous. People do die on that mountain during the winter. There can be TONS more snow than when we went, it's easy to get lost, slip, become injured, freeze to death, etc. We went at the very beginning of winter, which isn't so harsh, and we were ready to turn around at any point if it looked bad. Please be careful with winter hiking in Japan. People do actually die every year doing this, though usually in January and February.
