In the face of the escalating climate crisis, the construction industry is witnessing a revival of wood as a primary building material. This shift towards timber and hybrid timber constructions is motivated by the need to conserve resources and minimize CO2 emissions. Wood, with its versatile properties such as load-bearing capacity, flexibility, prefabrication ease, and benefits in thermal insulation, health, and aesthetics, has become an appealing alternative to traditional materials. Which is exactly why Maria visited the famous AEDES architecture forum to inquire about the future of timber construction.
The "Wood's Up!" exhibition at Aedes showcases 16 realized and planned timber buildings of various typologies, underscoring the ecological and innovative potential of this ancient yet modern material. The exhibition highlights projects that emphasize local structures, alternative financing models, and ecological considerations, reflecting a global perspective on sustainable construction.

This resurgence of wood in urban settings is not merely a nostalgic nod to the past but a strategic response to modern challenges. The versatility of timber, combined with advancements in fire safety and structural integrity, makes it a viable material for contemporary architecture. The Aedes exhibition illustrates how timber construction has evolved, highlighting projects that integrate this renewable resource into innovative and sustainable designs.
By spotlighting these exemplary timber projects, "Wood's Up!" opens up new perspectives on the future of construction, encouraging further exploration and adoption of sustainable building practices in response to our urgent environmental needs.
Special thank you to AEDES and Christine Meierhofer.
