In this video I show how to keep from hyperextending the knees while doing the leg curl exercise. I also show my setup for rehabilitating ankle injuries and a cheap way to add extra load pins as in my 5 load pin setup. More notes below.
If you look at modern leg curl machines, they seem to all be "bent" in the center, which helps to not hyper-extend the knees. The tennis ball also helps. You can replace the tennis ball with something else. I used a tennis ball because I play tennis and because of how it flexes. The tennis ball can also replace the weight clips as it keeps the weight straps on tight by the tension it provides.
Another easy way to put on and remove weight straps on the leg extension device is to stand and straddle the leg extension with your knees towards the bench, then just squat down a little so your rump pushes down on the top urethane foam pads while putting the weight straps on or taking off. Very easy!
To rehabilitate the ankles I just put my heels on the wood platform and then lift the arm curl bar with the ends of my feet/shoes. I wrapped the bar with tennis wrap and then held that in place with gaffers tape. In a future video I will be showing an even better way to rehabilitate/strenghen the ankles.
The "load" pins need to be 3/4" wide by 12" long. You can buy them individually or cut them down from a 48" or 60" straight bar. Remember to use LockTite on the locking collar set screws so they don't loosen up on you. If you are thinking about using retainer clips, they are too flimsy and the bar will move around too much. Also, although the roman chair pin is the same thickness as what is needed, it is not a solid bar. It's hollow. Furthermore, you can make the replacement load pins look more like the Soloflex load pins by adding more locking collars to each side, or some sort of extension, or maybe even adding small lengths of hollow bars slightly larger than the 3/4" load pins. Just slip them over the pins and then secure them with locking collars. You would then need 4 locking collars for each load pin.
I did find even heavier duty locking collars on eBay, but that was after I already purchased those in this video. And those heavier duty ones were black in color, so they would match the Soloflex.
Thanks for watching and thanks Chad for your inquiry about load pins. That inquiry motivated me to make this second video. I will hopefully be making at least 2 more videos about the Soloflex at some point in the future. One about how quickly I move from exercise to exercise and the other would be about The Total Gym vs the Soloflex (since I use both).
