Sony is bringing some star power to CES with a visit from musician Pharrell Williams.
The Japanese company is also showcasing two huge 8K televisions, one 85-inch and one 98-inch model.
STORYLINE
Sometimes it takes a little bit of star power to stand out on the CES press day.
Sony is doing their best by bringing in Pharrell Williams, straight from a holiday in Anguilla.
The star of hit songs such as "Happy" is there to talk about a mostly secret project that Sony and he are supposedly undertaking.
But in the end, it is clearly an attempt by Sony to sprinkle some stardust on the CES crowd.
Away from the stage, Sony is also showing some huge 8K televisions.
The Z9G LED televisions come in an 85-inch (216-centimetre) and a 98-inch (249-centimetre) model.
It is Sony's first consumer-ready line of 8K televisions, following releases by Samsung and LG last year.
However, there is very little actual 8K content to watch on the screens.
"There is a lot of discussion about 8K. It is not really something that is relevant to consumers now, or even for a few years. But it's still a big buzzword. That's what CES is all about," says Roger Cheng, executive editor of CNET
The Sony 8K televisions use the LED technology rather than the OLED technology in the LG screens and the QLED in the Samsung televisions.
But the acronyms mean very little to most consumers, says Nicole Scott, editor of Mobilegeeks.
"It's really difficult to differentiate a TV. So, everyone are coming up with a different buzzword in order to say 'hey, our display is so much better or so much different than everyone else.' How useful is it? I'm not entirely sure. I think it is just confusing the consumer."
CES 2019, the world's largest tech conference, runs Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th January.
Over 180,00 visitors are expected to attend the huge annual consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.
The top trends this year are the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G and high-tech mobility.
