The University of Western Australia Political Science and International Relations Department together with the Australian Institute of International Affairs in Western Australia (AIIA WA) hosted a zoom seminar titled ‘Are Africans in Australia a Diaspora?’ This seminar was presented by the University of Western Australia Associate Professor Farida Fozdar, Anthropology and Sociology; Dr David Mickler, Political Science and International Relations; and Dr. Sarah Prout Quicke, Geography, and Planning. This presentation discussed a work-in-progress paper considering whether, and in what sense, Africans in Australia can be understood as a diaspora. After considering the various meanings of diaspora, the three speakers contributed their expertise to discuss this question from demographic, political, and social/cultural perspectives. The team then outlined the innovative methodology being used to undertake a study of diasporic and transnational relationships between Africans in Australia and their homelands, before concluding with a set of questions that they hope to begin to answer through this approach.
This seminar was facilitated by Flavia Bellieni Zimmermann, Teaching Fellow and Doctoral Candidate at the School of Social Sciences, Political Science and International Relations, Centre for Muslim States and Societies; with the support of department chair Associate Professor Jie Chen, School of Social Sciences, Political Science and International Relations.
