As this sesquicentennial year celebrating the birth of the great Anglo-African composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) draws to a close, I'd (Les Marsden, Founder/Conductor of the MYSO) like to share one of his works from our December 20th, 2025 Festive Holiday Concert with you - his "Dance Rhapsody - The Bamboula." His story was one of rising from the lowliest of origins to the very apex of the British music world of the turn of the previous century; his music was performed constantly and his "Song of Hiawatha" choral trilogy made him universally known - to his premature death at only age 37, attributed to overwork. He was beloved on both sides of the Atlantic; he toured the US in 1904, 1906 and 1910, conducting the New York Philharmonic in his works during that last tour, during which he was proclaimed by the white musicians with the greatest of respect as the "Black Mahler" - their then-music director, and one off the greatest conductors of the age, as well as one of the greatest composers of all time.
