Did you memorize SpongeBob as a kid? Same. And for years, I felt dumb about it. But what if I told you that SpongeBob wasn’t a waste of our brain space ? That we can tap into the creative elements of this show that we learned so well and become more creative ourselves? Don’t believe me? Look how close it is to opera!

In this handcrafted video essay, I made an actual paper playbill to explore how SpongeBob SquarePants mirrors the structure, sound, and soul of what we often consider one of the highest forms of art.

So! Back to American childhood in 1999, when Nickelodeon consumption was an all-time high and SpongeBob was emerging as king. It’s a video essay about SpongeBob and pop culture, sure, but it’s also about memory, cultural guilt, and (anti) intellectualism.
