In this lesson you are going to learn how to use correctly Russian adverbs ЕЩЁ and УЖЕ. You are going to find out what typical mistake many learners make when using these adverbs and you will also learn about an additional meaning of ЕЩЁ.
Russian Adverbs “Ещё and УЖЕ” – what is the difference between them? You are going to find out TODAY! In this video lesson you will learn about a common mistake that students make when they use these adverbs. I’m Anastasia, and you are watching the ARusPro channel. Let’s achieve Russian Proficiency!
First let’s take a look at the adverb ЕЩЁ. In this video I will not only tell you about the difference between ЕЩЁ и УЖЕ, but we will also take a look at another meaning of the adverb ЕЩЁ. Yes, It actually has two meanings in Russian, and in English you will even translate it with different words.
1) So, the first meaning of ЕЩЁ is the meaning of “more” or “adding” something. For example:
----- У меня есть маркер, у меня есть ещё один маркер (or just “у меня есть ещё маркер”), и ещё маркер, и ещё маркер----------------
-----У меня есть маркер, а ещё у меня есть ручка, а ещё у меня есть карандаш------------ (When we say “ а ещё”, we are moving to a different item as suggested by the conjunction “a”, but we also do adding of things
More examples of this meaning:
A) –Можно ещё?
Конечно, дорогой!
Б) – Мы с друзьями в выходные едем жарить шашлыки ты поедешь?
А кто там будет?
Петя, Вася, Маша…
А кто ещё?
Может быть, Антон с Наташей.
О, нет, тогда не поеду, мы с ними в ссоре.
В) “ Ещё раз”, “ещё немного”, пиццерия «Ещё кусочек»
These were the examples of using “Ещё” in the meaning of “more”, and now we are moving on to the pair “Ещё-уже”. Literally “Ещё” is translated as “yet” or “still”, and “уже” is translated as “already”, however, these words in Russian and in English are not 100% equivalents. To understand how these two adverbs work in Russian, you need to use your visual thinking a bit and to see the flow of time. I’m going to show it to you. Imagine that time is a train that is going in only one direction, and it’s logical, right? You cannot turn time back. So, imagine that this is time, and each of the carriages are different events or happenings, and you are a person walking in this train in the same direction. When you reach a particular carriage, it’s УЖЕ.
