Tellis, the Tata Chair for Strategic Affairs and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, says, "The America first approach promised that it would deal with the concerns of Americans first, you know, as the term as the term suggests, with everything else coming second...in principle, that is a very beguiling approach, it is something that one can understand and even sympathize. But when you carry its logic to conclusion, it fails to deliver. It fails to deliver because this is the paradox. If you want to keep America first, if you want to keep our concerns domestically, front and center, then you have to do it in the context of responsible and continuous engagement to the world. You cannot advance the interests of the American population at home by simply neglecting the world beyond the United States. And I think that's where the America first approach, you know, doesn't quite appreciate how our prosperity and how our safety is intertwined with our deep, consistent and responsible engagement abroad."
