Presenter: Santiago Mayochi

Title: “America for humanity: Argentina’s stance against US expansion,” by Santiago Mayochi

This talk will examine the US expansion in the Caribbean and Latin America at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, with a focus on the response of Argentina’s diplomats and intellectuals. During this period, Argentina was a fast-growing economy and a competitor for the leadership of the continent. The talk will focus on the First Pan-American Conference, where the Argentinean diplomats opposed the US and elaborated on their stance against the Monroe Doctrine and the idea of “America for the Americans”. Furthermore, we will touch upon the following events of the US expansion and Argentina’s response.



Bio: Santiago Mayochi is a historian formed in Argentina. He is currently in the third year of the Ph.D. program of the History Department at UConn. He researches Latin American history with a focus on imperialism and the United States’ foreign relations.
