Nikolai Medtner composed three piano concertos, each showcasing his deeply Romantic style, intricate structure, and philosophical depth. His Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor, Op. 33, completed in 1914, is dramatic and virtuosic, blending stormy energy with lyrical introspection in a single continuous movement. The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 50, finished in 1927 and dedicated to Rachmaninoff, is more classical in form, with three movements and a particularly majestic opening that recalls Beethoven, while still featuring Medtner’s hallmark complexity and passionate character. The Piano Concerto No. 3 in E minor, Op. 60, subtitled “Ballade,” was completed in 1943 during his time in England. It is a highly narrative and poetic work in three connected movements, evoking an epic journey and considered by many to be his most profound concerto. All three works are technically demanding and musically dense, combining Russian lyricism with Germanic formal discipline, and have gained renewed appreciation in recent years for their originality and depth.
