The story goes that in May 1820 a ship from Tangier moored on the coast to bury one of its crew members in the sand, covered with a cloak, who had died under mysterious circumstances. The curse took place when shortly after a local who was walking around saw the cloak and put it on to cover himself from the humidity of the night... He died the next day and in a short time there were already 50 people dead.
Other sources point to different causes of the origin of the epidemic. Although they maintain that a ship arrived in the bay, they explain that in the town of Son Servera a neighbour died in clinically unclear circumstances and then her husband and a neighbour died. It is believed that the two men had collaborated in the tasks of unloading the ship that had come to the coast to bring wheat, since there was a shortage due to a great drought in the region. Since then the disease has spread.
Be that as it may, the accelerated proliferation of the epidemic forced the town doctor, together with the one from Artà, to recognize the disease and decide to isolate the sick. At the beginning of June, the Superior Board of Health forced the establishment of the military sanitary cordon in Son Servera, strictly prohibiting trespassing it. The town thus entered into a desolate environment, because no one dared to go out into the streets. It was so devastating that out of 1,808 inhabitants, 1,040 died; Only 768 people remained, whom we have to thank, through this sincere memory, for the effort they made to socially rebuild our town.
The agony and misfortune lasted about three months, until little by little, at the end of August, it seemed that everything was already under control; In fact, there were no more deaths, although the cordon was kept for a long time as a precaution.
On June 5, 1820, the mayor, the aldermen and the vicar decided that they would mark the day on which the cordon sanitaire was lifted, February 1, as an official holiday.
Es pastoret, a sculpture that represents a shepherd dressed in a cape, the work of local artist Eduardo Servera, reminds us of conflicting emotions: the joy of seeing the evolution of the town, with its neighbours proud of who they are and where they are from; but also the emotion of remembering our ancestors who unluckily suffered from the devastating disease.
