Описание: 🇱🇰🌍 Dual Citizenship & Driving Licence Conversion (Sri Lanka)

✅ Key Rule

If you hold Sri Lankan citizenship (including dual citizenship), you are treated as a Sri Lankan citizen by the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT).

➡️ You must drive in Sri Lanka with a Sri Lankan driving licence.
➡️ An International Driving Permit (IDP) is NOT valid for long-term residents or citizens.


🔄 Converting a Foreign Driving Licence to a Sri Lankan Licence

A – Who is eligible?

You can convert if:
You are a Sri Lankan citizen or dual citizen
You have a valid foreign national driving licence
The licence is not expired


❌ IDP alone is not sufficient
❌ Tourists cannot obtain a permanent licence


B – Where to apply?

📍 Department of Motor Traffic (DMT)
Werahera – Colombo
(Conversions are usually handled only at Werahera)


C – Required documents

Bring originals + copies of:

1. 🇱🇰 Sri Lankan NIC
2. 🇱🇰 Sri Lankan passport
3. 🌍 Foreign passport (if applicable)
4. 🚗 Foreign driving licence (original)
5. 🌐 International Driving Permit (IDP) – recommended
6. 🏥 Medical certificate (including eye test)
7. 📝 DMT application form
8. 📸 Passport photo (often taken at DMT)
9. 💰 Applicable fees

D – Driving test required?

👉 Usually NO test if the licence is from:

EU countries

UK
USA
Canada
Australia
Japan


⚠️ DMT may require a theory or practical test if:

Vehicle classes are unclear

Documents are incomplete or very old


E – Licence categories issued

You will receive only the categories shown on your foreign licence
(e.g. Car ≠ Motorcycle unless clearly listed)


F – Processing time

Temporary receipt / confirmation: same day

Smart-card driving licence: 2–6 weeks


G – Validity of Sri Lankan licence

🚗 Car / 🏍 Motorcycle: 8 years
🚛 Heavy vehicles: 4 years


⚠️ Important notes

Dual citizens cannot legally drive long-term using a foreign licence
Police and insurance require a Sri Lankan licence
IDP is valid only for short-term tourists
