Residents say they must now walk five hours through freezing high-altitude terrain and muddy paths just to reach basic essentials.

Indonesia’s disaster agency reports a staggering 967 deaths, with 262 people still missing and more than 5,000 injured after cyclone-triggered floods and landslides ripped through Sumatra. The storm also caused nearly 200 fatalities in Malaysia and southern Thailand, making it one of the region’s worst natural disasters in years.

Local officials are urgently calling on the national government in Jakarta to declare a national emergency to unlock more funds for rescue, recovery, and rebuilding efforts.
