Today I’ve been to the Archerfield Airport with William Fletcher (@fletchy40) as part of the Brisbane Open House event that is taking place over this weekend. This is the first video I’m uploading today (the other video being of planes taking off and landing at Archerfield Airport).
The crew at Archerfield Airport did an airside tour using a 1990s Toyota Coaster, driving us throughout the airport. While there were many aircraft I spotted on the airside tour that aren’t out of the ordinary for a general aviation airport, I found a few highlights:
L-39 fighter jet. These fighter jets were built in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War and after the war ended, many of them became civilian warbirds for taking people on joyrides. Fun fact: the L-39 on Flightradar24 appears as a similar shape to the Concorde due to its delta wing design.
GAF Nomad. This aircraft is probably the last one remaining in Australia aside from a couple preserved in museums, but 172 of these aircraft were built in Victoria. They were utility aircraft, and some of them went to the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
Fairchild Metroliner (VH-UZP). This was a freight aircraft, but originally it was a commuter airliner capable of seating up to 19 people onboard. The fact that these kind of aircraft occasionally operate to Archerfield means it is theoretically possible for very small commuter operations to occur from Archerfield - and if that does hypothetically occur, it would be interesting.
Spitfires. There were two of them on static display outside the terminal building, one of which is from the RNZAF (that one has the Kiwi roundel and is red) another from the RAAF. They were used in WWII against Imperial Japan.
