Here I clean and test the basic functions of the alternator. I first perform a simple diode test. Diodes are responsible for converting alternating current (AC—what the alternator produces), into direct current (DC— which is what the vehicle runs on). Since diodes allow electrical current to flow in one direction only, the polarity of the direct current electrical energy at one end of the diode chain is always positive, whereas at the other end of the chain, the polarity is negative. Here I am testing the overall diode function.

The second test is to see if the alternator can produce DC power. If it can we need to see if can produce adequate power to run the car.

The final test was to test the voltage regulator to make sure the alternator does not produce too much power.

Just so you know. I have never pulled an engine before and I have never rebuilt one either. This video series is how an inexperienced old guy dismantled a 560SL engine.

You also need a power source. In this video I used a batter charger, but you can use a car battery instead.
