Like many other people in Asia, I was brought up not just by my parents and the family I was born into, but also a nanny – my Yaya Joy. I call her Cheche (Chinese for older sister), but she’s more like my second mother.
I decided to try cooking this dish, Adobo sa Atsuete, which is a speciality of her hometown Iloilo, in the Philippines, to celebrate her birthday. Even though she no longer lives in Singapore, I wanted to mark the occasion and remember all the good times we had growing up, like making flan, going for picnics with her friends, or her self-imposed training school for Binibining Pilipinas.
I hope that if, like me, you have a helper at home, taking care of your family, you’ll take the opportunity to get to know them, learn about their families and maybe even cook something from their hometowns together.
