Journalist speaks out after being fired over EU Israel question

Italian journalist Gabriele Nunziati used his appearance on Massimo Gramellini’s La7 programme In Altre Parole to explain how he was fired by his agency, Agenzia Nova, an Italian newswire service.

He was dismissed after asking the European Commission whether Israel should pay to rebuild Gaza, just as Russia is expected to rebuild Ukraine.

Nunziati said the backlash began once the clip went viral.

Agenzia Nova told him his question was not appreciated, then sacked him, claiming his question was “technically incorrect”.

He described the firing as a clear effort to silence a journalist who challenged a state responsible for Gaza’s destruction.

The host and guests agreed with him, criticising how a legitimate question about Israel’s responsibility was used as the pretext to sack a young reporter.

Nunziati later wrote that any attempt to intimidate a journalist is an attack on the entire profession and weakens its ability to function.
