The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord commemorates the moment when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, forty days after His birth, in accordance with Jewish law. There, the righteous Simeon and the prophetess Anna recognized the child as the long-awaited Messiah. Simeon proclaimed Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
This feast, also known as Candlemas, symbolizes the offering of Christ to the Father and His manifestation as the Light of the World. It reminds the faithful of the purity and obedience of Mary and Joseph, who fulfilled the Law with humility and devotion.
The Presentation marks both a joyful and prophetic moment: while celebrating the arrival of the Savior, Simeon also foretold the suffering that would come — that a sword would pierce Mary’s heart.
It is a day of light, faith, and dedication — a call to offer our lives to God as Mary and Joseph offered Christ in the Temple.
