My latest tasting was of a superb, mature, Douro red table wine from top-producers Alves de Sousa. The wine is a field blend of over 30 different indigenous Portuguese grape varieties from a single vineyard planted over 100 years ago. The different varieties were all picked by hand at the same time and fermented as a field-blend. The wine aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, 50% of the barrels were new and the other half were second fill barrels. 2005 was a very dry vintage and the wine with its 15.5% alcohol shows great concentration.
