Mahasadhvi Chandanbala (Vasumati) was the daughter of King Dadivahana of Champa. Once, the king of Kaushambi attacked Champa. A soldier named Kakmuk looted the city and captured Queen Dharani and Vasumati (Chandanbala). On the way, the soldier cast lustful glances at the queen. To protect her chastity and save herself from the soldier's evil intentions, the queen committed suicide.

After the queen's suicide, Princess Vasumati (Chandanbala) also threatened to do the same. Seeing the princess's resolve, the soldier's heart softened. He took Princess Vasumati to his home, but his wife objected. He then took her to a marketplace (a slave-trading place) and sold her at auction, using the money to appease his wife.

The highest bid in the auction was placed by a courtesan from Kaushambi, but the princess refused to go with her. Impressed by the princess's gentleness and virtues, a wealthy merchant, a follower of the Shramana tradition, paid the courtesan a higher price and took Vasumati with him.
Dhanavaha was a righteous man, but his wife, Mula, was a suspicious woman. When she saw such a divine girl crossing the threshold of her house, her suspicious nature led her to misinterpret the situation. The relationship between Dhanavaha and Vasumati was like that of a father and daughter.
