Milan, December 1, 2020. “Eagle Eye” webinar was held today in NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy, to increase level of understanding of threats and challenges coming from the South of the Alliance.
The event was a great occasion for NRDC-ITA leaders and staff to deal with the most important topics at stake in the Alliance today, such as the current geo-strategic situation in the region of Middle East and North Africa and its potential future developments.
Following the opening remarks of NRDC-ITA Commander - Lieutenant General Guglielmo Luigi MIGLIETTA, the Chief of the Italian Army - Lieutenant General Salvatore Farina - introduced the topic, highlighting risks and opportunities associated to NATO’s Southern Flank and offering a proposal for scalable and tailored plans to cope with related potential challenges. Professor Andrea MARGELLETTI, from the Center for International Studies, was the renowned moderator and relator of the activity.
The first Panel of discussion offered the opportunity to elaborate on Middle East and North Africa, thanks to the contribution of distinguished panelists such as Lieutenant General Roger L. CLOUTIER (Commander of Allied Land Command), Doctor Valeria TALBOT (Italian Institute for International Political Studies) and Professor Emanuele CASTELLI (University of Parma).
Panel two focused on the Sahel Region and related economic aspects, with the outstanding contributions of Professor Juan Francisco Corona (CEU - University of Barcelona), Doctor Chloe BERGER (NATO Defence College) and subject matter experts from the NATO Hub for the South in Naples.
The outcomes of the discussion encompassed a number of interesting perspectives and insights that framed the context of uncertainty and fragility of the Southern region, amplified by historical reasons and opposing interests. The event represented an excellent opportunity for the NRDC-ITA community to increase their knowledge on the complex and challenging dynamics in MENA region and to identify cutting-edge solutions to ensure security and stability in the area.
