In October 1987, Michigan DJ Steve Cook recorded a folk song for his Halloween special. “The Legend of the Dogman” told the story of a seven-foot-tall, wolf-like creature that stalked the woods of northern Michigan. It was fiction—until the calls started flooding the station. Listeners reported seeing the exact creature from the song. Police filed reports. Photographs surfaced. And over the next 30 years, the Michigan Dogman grew from a radio prank into a fully-fledged cryptid with hundreds of alleged sightings, documentary features, and an annual festival.
This episode of Chronicles of the Obscure investigates: Did Steve Cook’s song create a mass hallucination? Or did it simply give a name to a legend that was already lurking in the dark pine forests of the Great Lakes? We examine the most credible sightings, the eerie parallels to older Indigenous myths, and the psychology of how a story can will a monster into existence.
