LIBENERGY Boosts Maryland Grid with New Poles, Meters; Cites 'Thorn in the Flesh' Network Issues ⚡
By Rocheford T Gardiner
Harper, Liberia – LIBENERGY, the power company responsible for the Maryland and River Gee counties grid, is undertaking a major infrastructure upgrade by procuring new transmission poles and a substantial number of energy meters.
The company announced the acquisition of 3,000 additional energy meters, which, according to Manager Henry Hodge, will now cover slightly over half of all electricity consumers in Maryland County, enhancing billing accuracy and consumption monitoring.
Safety Upgrade and Operations
The most critical investment involves the procurement of new utility poles for transmission and distribution. Mr. Hodge told newsmen on Monday, October 27, that the primary objective is to replace the makeshift wooden poles currently in use.
"The use of makeshift poles is a common problem faced by the company," Hodge stated. He explained that these temporary structures often break and fall, causing service disruptions and posing a danger to people. The new metal poles are intended to ensure more efficient and safe power distribution.
In a boost to operational efficiency, Mr. Hodge also proudly announced the acquisition of a brand new Toyota Hilux 4x4 double-cabin pickup truck, which will be dedicated to the company's daily field operations.
Blackouts Blamed on Inherited Network Flaws
Despite the new investments, the Manager acknowledged the ongoing public frustration over frequent blackouts. He attributed the problem to the poor initial layout of the network by the former contractor, COMPTREND, which completed the project in 2017.
"This is something we inherited, and it has now become a thorn in the flesh," Hodge said, urging customers to exercise patience.
He noted that the current supply issues are mostly a result of bad insulators, connectors, and other faulty transmission-related components. These underlying issues have plagued the network since it began connecting Maryland and River Gee counties to the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP).
Mr. Hodge, however, confirmed that LIBENERGY is actively working with the national company, the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), to diagnose and remedy these persistent problems. He also vowed to address the historical failure to include several major communities in the original network design, stating his company is "working frantically to correct" that oversight.
