Your brain processes scent before conscious thought, straight to the limbic system. First impressions form in 2-3 seconds. Here's how projection matters.
FULL DESCRIPTION:
Most people think first impressions form when someone consciously registers your scent. But that's not how the brain works.
Scent bypasses your thalamus (the brain's relay station) and goes straight to the limbic system: your emotional brain. This means your brain triggers emotional associations (pleasant/intrusive, safe/overwhelming, inviting/distant) before you consciously register what you're smelling.
By the time someone thinks "that person is wearing cologne," their unconscious has already formed an impression.
In this video, I break down the psychology and neuroscience of how scent shapes first impressions:
• Olfactory processing: Why scent reaches the brain faster than sight or sound
• Thin-slicing: How impressions form in the first 2-3 seconds (rapid cognition)
• Projection as proximity signal: What close, medium, and far projection communicate unconsciously
• Alignment vs. dissonance: Why mismatched energy and projection feel "off"
I also explain why restraint often reads as more confident than volume, not because quiet scents are better, but because when your projection matches your presence, there's no gap for people to notice.
