At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, American sprinter Jesse Owens had no shoe sponsor.
German shoemaker Adi Dassler, co-founder of the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory (which later became Adidas), personally visited Owens in the Olympic Village and offered him a pair of his handmade spiked shoes.
Dassler saw Owens’ potential and believed performance mattered more than race or politics — a bold stance in Nazi Germany, where supporting a Black athlete was dangerous and defiant.
Despite the risk, Owens accepted the shoes — and went on to win 4 gold medals, right in front of Hitler.
That historic moment made Owens a global legend, and brought worldwide attention to Dassler’s shoes — laying the foundation for what would become Adidas.
