In 1750, the Lima Mint produced its final series of 4 Escudos gold cobs, some of which were uniquely struck using dies intended for 8 Escudos, resulting in a distinctive muled reverse. These coins are exceptionally rare and hold significant historical value.
Many of these 1750 4 Escudos coins were part of the treasure aboard the Nuestra Señora de la Luz, a ship that sank off the coast of Montevideo in 1752. The wreck was discovered in 1992, and subsequent salvage operations recovered numerous artifacts, including these rare coins.
The 1750 4 Escudos represents the end of an era in Spanish colonial coinage, marking the last year of traditional cob-style minting in Lima before transitioning to milled coinage. Its unique muled design and association with the La Luz shipwreck make it a coveted piece for collectors and historians alike.
