If we cannot stay at Alamein alive, we will stay there dead," British Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery told his Eighth Army in October 1942. Standing at this dusty Egyptian railway outpost just 60 miles west of Alexandria, "Monty" was driven forward by intelligence that even Hitler in Berlin didn't know – Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the legendary "Desert Fox" commanding the Afrika Korps, was running out of gas.
But what Germany's most celebrated general lacked in fuel for his tanks, he made up for with a secret weapon...
The Allies called it the "Devil's Garden," and it was Rommel's deadliest trap of the North African campaign. In front of it, British Sherman and Crusader tanks sat immobilized in the 100-degree heat of the Western Desert - perfect targets for German 88mm anti-aircraft guns repurposed as tank-killers.
To get Rommel, the British would have to enter the garden’s gates. And the Devil waited there ready to water the ground red with blood.
