In our last briefing in this series, we heard from experts in regional geopolitics, counter-terrorism, and negotiations on the strategic case for a ceasefire. If you missed it, you can watch it here: • Briefing: The Strategic Case For a Ceasefi... .
On December 15th, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced S.Res.504, invoking section 502B(c) of the Foreign Assistance Act, a rarely used oversight mechanism focusing on US arms sales and human rights. If passed, this resolution offers a means to debate and consider the role U.S. weapons are playing in the devastating harm to civilians in Gaza, as well as new pathways for Congress to conduct oversight.
In this event, panelists from Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC), Amnesty International USA, and former Director of Congressional & Public Affairs at the State Department will discuss the implications of invoking Section 502B(c) of the Foreign Assistance Act and the importance of examining unconditional military assistance to Israel as the war in Gaza continues.
The panel will conclude with a Q&A section, where we encourage attendees to share their questions (submit questions ahead of time via the form below).
Panelists:
Josh Paul, Former Director of Congressional & Public Affairs, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, Department of State
John Ramming Chappell, Advocacy & Legal Fellow, CIVIC
Elizabeth Rghebi, MENA Advocacy Director, Amnesty International USA
Odeliya Matter, Program Assistant for Middle East policy, Friends Committee on National Legislation (Moderator)
Event sponsored by Demand Progress Action, Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), and Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC)
