Founded in 2003 by Dr. Luanne Freer, the Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic (aka "Everest ER") is a joint effort of the Himalayan Rescue Association-USA (a US-based nonprofit charity organization) and the Himalayan Rescue Association (a nonprofit Nepali NGO). The 2024 climbing season marked the 21st year the Everest ER has been successfully operating at an elevation of 17,600 feet above sea level. Nearly 1,400 patients received medical assistance from the Everest ER team this season.
The original 12' x 20' SQ Series™ portable building from WeatherPort® (now a brand of Alaska Structures®) provided a safe refuge for carrying out life-saving medical procedures, treating common illnesses associated with high altitude sickness to deadly conditions such as High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE). Dr. Freer described the WeatherPort medical clinic as "resilient," noting "it was designed and built so well" and held up to high winds, snows, and avalanches that collapsed other base camp tents.
On April 25, 2015, the 7.8 magnitude Nepal Earthquake resulted in a deadly series of avalanches that reached the Everest Base Camp with hurricane-force winds and snow, mostly concentrated on the central portion of the Everest Base Camp, where the Everest ER was located. Though damaged, the Everest ER was the only structure in the central part of the Everest Base Camp left standing. "I think our doctors would credit the medical clinic with saving their lives," Dr. Freer said. Dr. Freer went on to explain, "One of our doctors was in the structure with a patient, and both of them thought that if they had been outside, they would have been killed. When you look at the pictures, you can see that the facility was pretty mangled but still standing. Whatever inherent strength it had, it kept the bulk of whatever force hitting it off our doctor and our patient. We're really grateful for that."
Upon hearing the news, the team at Alaska Structures® contacted Dr. Freer to discuss donating a new Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic for the 2016 Everest climbing season. Dr. Freer and Team wanted to incorporate a waiting room and medical clinic inside the same structure, separated by an internal partition instead of having two separate structures. Another request was to feature large "Everest ER" logos on each side of the medical clinic. Lastly, the new Everest ER needed to remain designed for mobility and be capable of being transported by porters and yaks through Nepal's rugged environment.
This video showcases the redesigned and donated 12' x 30' Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic provided by Alaska Structures®. The custom-designed Alaska XT Series™ shelter is a lightweight and portable system that enables the Everest ER team to efficiently transport, set up, and dismantle the clinic at Everest Base Camp each climbing season. Since 2016, this state-of-the-art facility has been instrumental in supporting the Himalayan Rescue Association's mission to provide vital medical services to climbers, Sherpas, and local communities. The clinic enhances safety on the mountain by offering emergency medical care and high-altitude medical expertise and contributes to ongoing research in high-altitude medicine. Alaska Structures' contribution has significantly improved the operational capabilities of the Everest ER team, enabling them to continue to serve those who venture into the challenging environment of Mount Everest.
A special thanks to Doctors Luanne Freer, Tash Pirie-Burley, Tatiana Havryliuk, Yogesh Subedi, and Rachel Tullet, as well as Lakpa Norbu Sherpa (logistics manager and rescue coordinator) for helping make this film a reality, for providing a great service to the men and women that risk their lives to stand on top of the world, and for being a great customer for all these years.
